I Was Born This Way: relaxation isn't my thing

What. You don't think I know who Lady Gaga is? Just because I'm old doesn't mean I am totally living in the past. I actually think that chick can sing, even if she steals some songs from Madonna, like "I Was Born this Way" which is a pretty good running/jogging/dancin' tune.

So my 70.3 was over on April 10. You would think I would be slurping up the easy days off this month afterwards, reveling in coming home to dinner on time, sleeping in on Sundays rather than getting up at 5 or 6 to crank out a long run, working in the yard on Sat afternoons rather than going for a 3 hour bike.

Well, I am. Sort of. A little bit. I'm also restless and bored and SO looking forward to starting training again on Sunday for my first full marathon, as well as continuing to train for shorter triathlons along with Patient Spouse, who has now elected to kick it into his own higher gear of training. I miss some of the push and pull of hard working out. If I wasn't Born this Way, I have apparently now Become This Way, which isn't nearly as interesting a song title.

Since the 70.3, I have probably worked out 2-4 days each week at my own pace, often without wearing a watch. I went for an 1100 yard swim Wed the 13th, took a gentle 3 mile run on Tuesday the 19th (this was kind of a check up run; wanted to see if anything hurt or fell off; fortunately, nothing did either way), went for another 1100 yard swim on the and added 4 sprint 25's to the end just for grins; went for a 5 mile easy run (no watch) on Good Friday morning, joined Patient Spouse for a quick 14 mile bike ride on Sunday after church, and last night joined Patient Spouse in a fairly easy interval run for an hour (10 minute warm up, 2 minutes hard and 2 minutes walk for 5 times, then 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy jog, 2 minute walk for 5 times, then a 10 minute cool down jog). Tonight I plan to go to spin class for about 45 minutes and tomorrow night another swim....but I WILL take Thursday, Friday, and Saturday off, unless I decide to get up Friday morning for a quick 4 mile easy run.

On Sunday, Coach Claire comes back to me with a Plan for (a) getting across that marathon finish line and (b) helping me shave some time off my sprint triathlon times. Patient Spouse and I met with her this past Saturday to get some pointers on our swim form and our running form. She gave me excellent tips on my arm position during the pull portion of the swim (they are too straight) and also during my run (doing too much crossover in my arm swings).

I'm also focusing a bit on some strength training; doing planks and pushups more than before since I have the time and it doesn't take long to toss down the mat and do these at home.

Our next race is in June; there is a sprint tri in McKinney and although it will be warmish here in June (like, in the upper 90's), I think we can manage to get through it without wilting too badly. I'd like to see myself hit the podium on one of these sprint tris one day, but I may have to wait until next year when I gracefully edge into the 55-60 age group. Right now I'm competing against 49 year olds which is tough, but then again, I'm pretty tough too. You just never know.

Patient Spouse may also be hearing the siren call of his own 70.3 goal. If so, next year, we'll be gearing up for another one; perhaps Austin or Florida in fall of 2012!

Sunday Will Never Be the Same: Post Race

Spanky and the Gang--two of my fav, fav, fav pop songs came from this little group with great melodic charm: Sunday Will Never Be The Same and Lazy Day. No way to listen to either of these tunes without singing along. Not great jogging songs, okay, but you are not always going to be jogging. Right now, I'm not jogging at all!

Once I crossed that finish line at 4:41 p.m. I only had two thoughts: to find Patient Spouse and that I really, really, really wanted a shower. I was covered in a delightful mix of salt, sand, Gatorade (from being splashed), sunscreen, Bodyglide, Sharpie, sweat, AccelGel (no matter how hard you try, some of that stuff ends up on the outside of you) and pure grime. I don't mind getting down and dirty with the best of them, but this was something new.

At the finish line, they handed me my cool medal and a really nice running hat with the event logo. I think Chris Lieto was hanging around helping hand out medals (since he had finished his race, winning it, about 345 hours before me) but everything was such a blur.

I hobbled over to where I had last seen Patient Spouse (about 120 yards from the finish line) but he was not there, so I hobbled again (the right IT band still talking nasty to me) to the place we had designated during the sprint race the day before as our meeting place, and he wasn't there either. This second location had a nice, empty bench so I decided to sit and then to stretch out on it--oops! That was my empty water bottle in my fuel belt digging into my back, so I sat up to remove it and then lay back down. Within a couple of minutes Patient Spouse arrived with a fresh bottle of water, and was concerned that I was lying down. Was I okay? Actually, with the exception of my nagging IT band, I felt pretty good. We exchanged sweaty kisses and he looked remorseful for forgetting to bring both my morning clothes bag (with the wind, I was starting to get a little chilled from my sweaty state) AND the peanut M&Ms he had bought to bribe me to the finish line.

We hobbled (well, I hobbled and he walked) first to the finish line to cheer on a couple more finishers, and then to the food tent where I snagged the very last piece of cheese pizza that Papa John's was giving to the finishers (the rest was pepperoni, and although I was feeling pretty good, just looking at the pepperoni slices made me feel a bit queasy). We sat down to eat and halfway through I got really chilly and decided to go into transition where I had a lightweight running jacket in my transition backpack. Once at my spot, it seemed silly to leave without taking it all out with me. So I loaded up everything in the pack, slung it on my back, grabbed the wetsuit and flung it over the back, and slowly wheeled my way out of the checkout and back to the eating area, where I finished my cheese pizza and my water.

One of the things that concerned me on the race was that I didn't have to use the portapot after mile 26 on the bike. Once I finished the bike, I told myself I should go (and thought that it would not be a bad idea) but wanted to get to my first walk break on the run before I stopped. Of course, the first walk break did not coincide with a portapot, and by the time one did, I was more than halfway through the run and really didn't need to stop that badly. In my mind, I told myself I wasn't hydrating enough even though I had consumed 36 oz of Gatorade before the swim, another 36 oz on the bike, and I was drinking water and Gatorade like a thirsty fish at every single walk break I took. I didn't ever bonk or feel dizzy, and I honestly don't think I could have drank any more than I did, but it just goes to show how much moisture your body absorbs during this kind of exercise on a warm day.

After that, we walked back to the finish area and cheered on a few more later finishers and then started the slow walk back to the hotel area (about half a mile). I was actually surprised I felt okay--no doubt both hamstrings, calves and IT bands were sore, and my back a little sore, but the rest of me felt okay. I was probably suffering a bit from post race confusion, as I always do, but I think I communicated in whole sentences during the walk.

We stopped by our car on the way to load up the bike so we wouldn't have to deal with that later. Then we wandered the hallways to our room (we were a long way away from the door) and when we got inside, I went straight to the bathroom and ran a hot bath. Stripped off my sweaty gear and took a long, hot bath and washed all the salt and grit off me while Patient Spouse went to pick us up dinner from a local Italian place. I wasn't all that hungry--I really had eaten well during my race--but the cheese manicotti was too good to pass up and the chocolate cake was manna from heaven. I had one glass of wine which nearly knocked me on my rear. At 10 p.m. I was in snooze land and woke up the next day feeling refreshed, if a bit stiff and sore on the lower parts of me.

Since then, I have done nothing but walk a lot and I did go for a 1100 yard easy swim the Wednesday after the race which really helped loosen up my muscles. I have lost all the little aches and pains of the day, and I plan to start back with some easy recovery runs and bike rides this weekend, before I start on May 1 to train for my marathon this winter, and to shave off some time on my sprint tris planned for this summer (hopefully one in June and another on Labor Day).

Looking back on the entire past year, here are some mental tidbits:

1. The race was hard, but it was really not THAT hard. In retrospect, I could have pushed farther and gone harder and faster, but I am glad I did not. This was my first one, and I wanted to finish upright, happy, uninjured and wishing I could do another one. That is what happened, and so the plan was perfect.

2. The entire process was hard, but again, not THAT hard. I truly believe any able bodied person with on real significant health issues can train and do a 70.3. It requires a lot of commitment with your time, and also with your money (face it, wetsuits, bikes, tri gear, running shoes--you can do less expensive, but you can't do free). But there is no reason to say "I can't do this." Trust me on that one. If I can, you can. Remember Yoda: "do, or do not. There is no try."

3. Believe it or not, I would LOVE to do another one of these. However, I simply can't give the time commitment again right now for training. My Patient Spouse, my clients, my friends, my family, my stepkids, all had to deal with me being gone to workouts six days a week, including weekends and holidays. To ask them to do it all again would be too much. So I'm taking a year off of that schedule, at least, and then once our last daughter graduates high school next year, we'll see. The desire to do another one, and do it faster even when I'm older, is there.

4. And double believe it or not, I would love to think about a full ironman. THAT I know can never happen as I will never have the time to train for one of those unless some stranger dies and leaves me a pot of gold so I don't have to work for a living. But I just want to point out that this race did not leave me with anything but a desire to keep going. It was that much fun.

5. Finally, and I have mentioned this before, I will point out that the best part of all this was the journey and not necessarily the destination. The destination was 8 hours; the journey was a year. I learned so much about myself during that time. Because of my work and family schedule, most of my workouts were done accompanied only by my iPod and a watch. I learned to trust my body to get me where I needed to go. I learned that being tired was not the same thing as being exhausted. I learned to push through being uncomfortable, being weary, being frustrated, and being disappointed. I learned to fall down and get back up again (literally and figuratively). I learned from my mistakes. I relished my little victories, sometimes being only one second shaved off my 25 yard pool sprint time. I enjoyed watching muscles and tone appear in areas of my body where I had never seen them before. I learned to appreciate the sunrise, the moonlit run, the sunshine dancing on the lake waters as I rode by, the gentle quiet of a gym pool late at night when you are the only one there, the silky feel of the water as you glide down and back. The simple joys of well fitting goggles, of a downhill rip on the bike after a hard climb, of a run through a gentle misting rain--things I would have never felt or noticed if sitting in front of a TV or computer. The world is lovely. Go see it.

I'm not done with the blog, although I will change its name now as I prepare for my first 26.2 miles of hoofing it.

I Get Around: 70.3 run to the finish line

The Beach Boys were a essential part of my growing up, especially in Galveston and the surrounding areas. You could not go to the beach when I was in high school without some Beach Boys tunes blasting on your car radio (AM/FM if you were lucky) or your fancy 8 track tape player. I think I owned every one of their albums or tapes (younger set: please don't ask, "what's a tape?" Thank you).

I Get Around was a perfect song to play in my head during the 13.1 miles of the run portion of my 70.3. The course wound around and through Moody Gardens, the parking lots, the driveways, some sidewalks, a short construction sand pit, for four loops. So it's not like you didn't know what was coming after the first loop.

After I managed to get off the bike and trot to my transition spot, I was in and out of T2 in 4:31, which was 29 seconds better than planned. It seemed longer. My patient spouse managed to video my whole T2, which was the only video he took of me the whole day, while I was standing still. I shrugged off those bike shoes with joy, and slipped on the running shoes, which I had powdered up the day before, and was pleased to discover that my painful bike hotfoot had completely and totally left the building. Grab the Garmin GPS off the bike stem and then fasten the watch band that goes with it around my wrist--took a couple of tries to do that--and slip the Garmin onto it and punch it to "run" mode. Visor on the head, number belt twisted to the front side. Fuel belt fastened around waist, full of my blue Gatorade small drink bottle, candy corn and baggie'd Luna Bar, once broken into bits, now fused back into a funny shaped bar. Gel bottle in back jersey pocket.

During the ill fated 1912 expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott to the North Pole (all in the expedition perished), one of the gallant explorers, a Captain Oates, seeing that without help all would be lost, volunteered to go for help (the nearest help being over 200 miles away) in the middle of a -40 blizzard. According to the journals, as he left the tents, in typical British fashion he said to the shivering occupants: "I'm going out now. I may be some time." Patient Spouse and I have borrowed his understatement a lot.

As I trotted out of my transition area for the run, and yes, I was indeed jogging, I turned to Patient Spouse and said, "I'm going out now. I may be some time." It was a bit warmer than -40, although the winds were pretty blizzard like. However, now they were a blessing rather than a curse (except for one particularly windy corner) as it was getting pretty toasty warm out there.

I had a Plan for the run, and except for the last freaking mile, I managed to stick to it. I knew this was a run where negative splits were just not going to happen. I was tired, but fortunately not terribly so, and I wanted to finish upright, smiling, with no major injuries or strains. So my Plan was for the first loop (about 3.3 miles) I would run 7 minutes and walk 3, run 7 and walk 3, the entire loop. The second loop would be run 6 and walk four, the third loop run 5 and walk 5, and the fourth loop run 4 and walk 6.

I started out with an easy run pace, about 11:35 min mile, which was pretty much my standard run pace every time I did run. I felt okay, nothing hurt too badly, and I was focused on finishing this event. Every time you started a new loop, you passed the finish line about 20 yards to one side, and it was tough to turn at the sign that said "2,3 and 4 loops this way." Of course, people were finishing right and left; the pros had finished long ago.

The first loop went as planned. Every walk break I sucked down my Gatorade, which was warm but wet, and every aid station I grabbed ice water and tossed half of it on my head and half of it down my gullet. Somehow, and I don't know how this happened, I never managed to pass an aide station during my walk breaks except once, so I had to toss and gulp on the run, until I ran out of Gatorade, and then I was forced to walk briefly while I refilled my carry bottle from the aid station cups.

There's one small hill on the loop, and a couple of what I would call uprises but not hills, and otherwise it's fairly flat. There was one corner I immediately named Windy Corner as the wind simply punched you in the face as you turned it, but as hot as it was, that was not necessarily a curse.

Each aid station was well stocked and the volunteers on the course were awesome. They all cheered and clapped for you and had something inspirational to say, even after seeing you four freaking times.

The first loop was crowded as the faster runners, especially the women, were still out on the course.

I finished the first loop feeling fairly strong, and started my second loop knowing I had less than 10 miles left on this epic journey. Every walk break I would first slug Gatorade, then eat something (mixing up my candy corn, my gel, and my Luna bar bites--it was a nice distraction while running to ask myself, "what treat do I get this next break? Oh, candy corn time, yummy!"). There were about four robust looking (nice word for a bit overweight) supporters on one stretch blowing long horns very loudly. And often. As I ran past them, I said to a fellow runner (large African American lady whom I cheered into the finish after I finished), "do you think they know how obnoxious they are?" Silly question on my part. Look at my watch and be amazed it's only 2 something; seemed like I had already been out for a million hours.

Second loop run six walk four. Eat, drink, breathe, move. Grab water and pour over head, gulp the rest. Thank the volunteers. Hand slap a couple of kids, although one eager youngster came at me with both hands and I feared I would get knocked backwards. Try to read the inspirational signs, none of which were as funny as I wanted. Try to read the chalk markings on the sidewalks, wondering why Easter Eggs was spelled Easter Egges. Try not to notice the course was getting less crowded. Smile and say "good job" to anyone you pass, or anyone that passes you. Hold up 2 fingers to Patient Spouse (who was always waiting in a different spot, which made it interesting to wonder where he would pop out next) to mean 2 more loops after this one.

Third loop run five walk five. No problems, but hamstrings getting a bit tight and IT bands starting to sing the blues a bit. Jive to the music from the Disco Bus set up at one corner (another place also had music playing, but he closed shop after my second loop; I guess he thought all the important people had finished). Consider walking the uphill and find that my walk break coincided exactly with the uphill, what awesome news. Little things like that make a big difference. Watch a spectator dressed in a shaggy dog suit come toward us with high knee jogging saying "pick it up, pick it up, pick it up." Watch a guy spectator try to talk his girl into a jog Windy Corner and asked her if she wanted me to kick him for her (got a laugh from them both). Had a guy come up and tell me I was making it look easy, and then run off of course. Run for awhile with a nice lady in a blue striped top and discuss that we would definitely make course time, even if we had to walk the whole rest of the way, which we were not going to do. Tell the nice lady in the big hat that I would only see her one more time. Mug for the photographer on the back side. Run for awhile with 81 year old Lew, who curves away for his finish line while I still have one more loop to go. Tip of the visor to him and I'm on my way.

Now I've passed the sign Loops 2,3 and 4 this way for the last time--last loop! 3.3 miles to go and it's not 4 p.m. yet; I'm on cruise control. Run 4 walk six, no worries, lots of walk time. Grab a defizzed Pepsi from an aid station and do the "no Coke only Pepsi" routine with him (anyone younger than 40 won't know this). Tell a fellow runner that I don't think I'll do this again tomorrow. Course more crowded now with walkers and watchers and non-racers than racers; have to dodge strollers and kids and spectators; wish they would do a wee bit better course control for the late runners but try not to let it annoy me too much. Three bikers getting their bikes from transition blocking the course ahead. A polite, "I know we're slower than you, but can you let us through?" and they jumped out of the way. However, several very fit earlier finishers are standing or sitting at course side encouraging the later racers which I found awesome.

One mile to go! Suddenly the right IT band says, ya know, we've done 69.3 miles today and we don't think we should do any more. Try to jog anyway and find the pain is just too much. Think about the fact that I have over an hour and a half until they close the course down, and I don't think that the pros need to worry about me beating them anytime soon, and so I settle into a hobble walk for most of the last mile. Not the Plan, but I came pretty close to it. 2/10s of a mile to the finish gimp to Patient Spouse and hand slap, grit my teeth and start running as there is no way I am gonna cross that finish line at a walk.

As you come across the finish line, the announcer announces your name and your home town and says "You have JUST COMPLETED the Lone Star Memorial Hermann 70.3!" It sent chills up my spine and I thrust both fists into the air and had tears in my eyes as I ran across the final mat. A full year of hard work, six days a week, never quitting, always pushing, and I'd done it. I was a 70.3 finisher.

I'm Driving My Life Away: the 56 miles of bike

Eddie Rabbitt: can you think of a better name than that for a singer? Especically this time of year? Kind of a bubble gum pop like song but it gets in your head and you can't get rid of it once that happens.

56 miles is a long way to do anything, and biking 28 of that into a howling headwind is not going to be the best part of my race. My intention was to average at least 14mph and I was really planning for more, as that is a slow pace for me, but I also wanted to end up with some legs left to do the run with.

As I came out of the water, I tried to duck into the fresh water cascade they had pouring down in order to just rinse off my face, but a short Asian chick bumped hard into me as she ran by and knocked me out of the area. I shuffled on to my transition spot and spent 6:41 in T1, 41 seconds longer than planned, but it seemed to just take a while to get myself organized, plus the distance from the water exit to T1 was pretty far.

I dumped my wetsuit and goggles and cap under the bike, took a quick swig of water to rinse the salt bayou out of my tonsils, re-applied some sunscreen on my face and arms, staggered one legged into my socks (always a fun thing, but on longer rides, I worry about blisters so I only go sockless for sprint distances), snapped on the helmet, put on the sunglasses, tugged on the gloves, don't forget the race belt, bike shoes on, and now grab the bike and trot to the mounting area. I ran a bit past the mounting line, lowered the bike and managed to clip in on the first try as I swung onto the bike and headed straight into the wind. In ten seconds I was down on the bars, and pretty much stayed there most of the time other than when stretching or eating.

The first mile was frustrating. I was headed slightly uphill and straight into a 25 mph wind and could not get any speed going; I felt like a turtle and was averaging around 13 mph for the first mile. I said to myself, this is not going to work. As I hit the turn onto the seawall by the Gulf, it didn't seem to get any easier. Finally, around mile 3, I was able to push it up to around 14-14.3 mph without exhausting myself. However, sometimes I would drop lower on a slight incline or an area with a big wind blast.

I shook off my worries and told myself how much fun it would be when I was headed back with the wind at my tail. I settled into a groove, pedaling in one gear mostly and hunkering down as low as I could comfortably go. Every mile on the dot I drank a big gulp of Gatorade from my water bottle between the bars and every 2.5 miles I stood up in the pedals and stretched for 10 seconds.

The course was mostly flat, with some very small inclines, and a couple of medium climbs when I got to San Luis Pass at mile 22, but nothing major. There were a lot of bikers coming back on the opposite side of the road. Because I am a slow biker, I didn't expect to pass anyone, but I actually passed a lot of people. Having another irrational fear, this one of being called for drafting, I would hesitate just outside the draft zone and gird my loins, and then hit the gas hard to pass the slower biker. I found a couple of frustrating moments when bikers would pass me and then SLOW DOWN, forcing me to back down to 13.8 or so to keep out of the draft zone. I always keep the gas pedal down for about a minute after I pass someone so they don't feel crowded but apparently not everyone follow this rule. One gal would pass me, and then I would pass her, and vice versa, but sooner or later I finally left her behind for good.

I saw lots and lots of flat tires, maybe 15 or so. I was worried about sustaining a flat, as I knew I was pushing course time (or thought I would be). I had to be at mile 48.2 at 1:18 p.m. and I had started the bike around 9:25 a.m. Plenty of time, unless I had a flat.

One girl passed me and then immediately slowed down to 12 mph. Irritated, I backed off as much as possible, but then I saw she had a flat and was pulling over. That could have been me.

I actually also passed about 4-5 guys, whose swim waves went off way before mine did. One looked pretty fit but was riding very slowly. I convinced myself he was a basketball player and had signed up for this on a lark.

I started eating every 5 miles. I started with a couple of candy corns, then went to the gel bottle, and then dug into my Bento Box for my PBJ sandwich, which, even though sealed in a baggie, was a soggy dough ball. I ate it anyway. I also saw that my Luna chocolate sports bar, which I had carefully cut into bite sized pieces and stored in another baggie, was now fused back into a solid bar. I grew up in this humidity. You think I would remember. Anyway, no problem to just bite off a tiny piece now and then. I tried to alternate snacks so I would have something different to look forward to each time. I was not terribly hungry, but I knew I had to eat, so I kept ingesting, and everything seemed to agree with my internal system just fine.

At mile 26, I stopped at an aid station to use the portapotty (no, I am not ever going to be able to go on the fly). It felt good to hop off for a minute, but so far, nothing hurt and I was feeling fine. I got back on quickly and was eagerly anticipating the turnaround to put this wind at my back at mile 28.

It seemed to take forever to get to mile 28. First, I had the climb up the San Luis Pass bridge into the wind which slowed me down a lot. Second, the road turned to harsh chip seal that rattled my teeth. Third, a small sandstorm started to blow since out here, there was hardly any rebuilding done after Hurricane Ike did its thing, and sand was mostly what was between me and the Gulf. I kept thinking I saw the turnaround but I kept being mistaken.

FINALLY the turnaround came, it was very narrow as the road was only two lane here so I turned slowly on the mats not wanting to get this far and crash, and then yes! the wind was behind me and now I was cooking between 15-16 mph without even working hard at it. I decided not to work too hard at it as I knew know I would make the cutoff times and wanted to save my legs for the run. It turned out that was a good decision.

I came up behind a lady that looked like she had a funny outfit on, when I got closer I realized she was riding IN HER WETSUIT, at least the bottom half, and the arms were flapping around her waist. She was weaving a bit and I passed her and said my usual "good job; good luck." I wondered. Was she training for Kona and trying to get really hot (it was already a very warmish day)? Did she forget her bottoms and this was all she had to wear? Did she just forget to take it off? I will always wonder.

Another lady passed me around mile 35 and as she passed, turned and threw up onto the roadside, barely missing me. I guess she preferred not to throw up on her downwind side and get herself, but this side nearly blasted me. Uck. I was so grateful my stomach was happy and resting easy.

I was focused on getting to mile 46, which meant 10 miles left, and then mile 46, where my cutoff time aid station was. I was cruising and comfortable until mile 43. Then both feet started to go numb, despite all the wiggling and stretching I was doing every 2.5 miles. At mile 45 my right foot went into full "hotfoot" mode, feeling like someone was cutting off my toes with a sharp knife. It was agony. I had experienced some numbness before on long rides, but not like this.

I debated whether to stop and walk around to get the blood circulating in my toes, but I was only 10 miles from transition and hated to stop. I kept telling myself to go another mile, another mile, and the pain got worse. I reached down and loosened my shoe to the max and wiggled my toes like mad, but it didn't help. The pain was so bad I thought I might throw up myself.

Still, I gritted my teeth and kept pedaling. My speed dropped to about 14.5 mph average but all I wanted to see was transition and to get my feet out of the pedals. I passed the 48.2 mile station with lots of spare time and kept pedaling.

Again, it seemed to take forever to reach the turn off the causeway onto the side streets, and I could not believe how long it took to get through all the side streets and into Moody Gardens. I waved at Patient Spouse who was waiting for me at the roadside and tried not to let him see the pain on my face. Several more turns--am I ever going to get there?--and THERE was the dismount line at last.

I catapulted off the bike and the pain immediately ceased. Sweet relief at last! I trotted into T2 and nearly stumbled as a wave of dizziness went over me, but then it was totally gone and I felt fine. I had survived the 56 miles of windy bike and now just had 13.1 miles between me and the finish line.

Next up: the four loop run, some interesting people and spectators, and the finish.

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay: Race Recap; The Swim

Otis Redding lent a sweet sad sound to this classic song, and I'll bet you that most Boomers have Sittin on the Dock of the Bay on their iPods somewhere. It was just a classic, and remains so despite the passage of time.

The 70.3 is over, and I am glad I don't have to do another one say, tomorrow. I'm tired and sore and so happy to be across that finish line, 8 hours and six minutes after my swim wave started; not the kind of race time that inspires but well ahead of my 8:15 goal and very much ahead of course closure time. I came in 30 of 39 in my age group, and four of those DNF'd, so I did not come in last, as I was thinking I might.

I'm going to recap the race in three segments because each one had its own challenges, enjoyments, and interesting moments.

The Big Swim is always the thing that lurks in your head as the intimidation factor. We all know we can do the bike and the run, unless something or someone breaks down, but the swim...well, anything can happen out there in waterspace. I was actually feeling fairly confident about the swim, and I really like to swim, but the back of the brain nagging keep mentioning thoughts of waves, wind, and not making cutoff time, as well as whether 650 younger women were going to run over me like a speedboat over a rowboat.

The morning alarm went off at 4:45 and woke me from a sound sleep. I had slept amazingly well the night before, which I normally don't do before a race, having hit the sack around 9 p.m. I immediately went to the window of the hotel room to check the wind, and it looked like a bloody hurricane outside in the semi dark, with palm trees whipping around. Eeps. Not what I had hoped for, but what I expected. The day had been given to me, and it was time to quit worrying about it. At least I saw no sign of rain or thunderstorms.

I choked down about 2/3 of my oatmeal laced with lots and lots of honey and brown sugar, and chugged down 12 oz of Gatorade with it, while I took a fast hot shower (to loosen muscles and wake me up), stretched a bit, and got into my tri shorts, sports bra and tri shirt, after Bodygliding up underneath. I fixed myself a bagel and peanut butter snack, grabbed my gear, double checked it, and a full 24 oz bottle of Gatorade and we headed out into the darkness and wind to transition. I was a bit nervous but not terribly so, felt focused and ready. Here we go.

I had a great transition spot (so did Patient Spouse on the sprint) being at the very end of my row, which gave me lots of room and of course made it easy to find. Make up karma for the 25 mph winds. I got bodymarked and nearly forgot my age when asked, this was pure Pre Race Mental Overload Syndrome.

Once into transition, I quickly set up my towel, shoes, helmet, sunglasses (still in a soft case as it was so humid I was afraid they would fog), race belt, number belt, run visor, etc. I loaded my bike Bento box with the cut up PBJ sandwich in a baggie (with a small rock for weight), some cut up Luna bars in a baggie (and another rock), and scattered candy corn at the bottom. I attached my full gel bottle to its holder next to the seat post, checked to make sure I was in pretty low gear, added the hydration bottle to the areo bars and another to the cage, set the Garmin on the bike mount, turned it on, and set it to bike and zero. A double check of my set up and going through pretend T1 and T2 showed me I had forgotten to set out my socks and gloves, so the mental practice saved me. Patient Spouse suggested I move my number down a bit on my helmet to open up more air vents, but when I tried it, the humidity would not let it restick to the helmet. Always prepared, I used a bandaid to attach it. My bike photos will show a wounded helmet number.

Finally, I applied Bodyglide to my legs and ankles, and sunscreen to every place I thought I needed it (I would be wrong on this, but didn't find that out until later). Legs, arms, shoulders, neck, ears, face. I had written the 2 Timothy 4:7 verse on my inner forearm for inspiration with a waterproof Sharpie (it stayed on long after my race number and age melted off my legs).

I double checked my wetsuit bag for my suit, swim cap and goggles, and checked that my race chip was securely fastened on my right ankle (I have an irrational fear of losing it, and would check it several times during the race). I grabbed my bagel, my Gatorade and my spouse who was toting the wetsuit bag, and we left transition about 6:40 a.m. and I visited the portapots for the last time pre swim.

We went to the swim area to watch the pros go off at 7 a.m. and I got my first look at the water, the wind, the sky and the bouys. Although the first turn bouy looked a LONG way off, I knew it really wasn't; it was only about 600 yards away from the start. The entire swim course had yellow marker bouys every 100 meters which was awesome and they were so easy to see even from the shore. The only thing that got my heart knocking was the wind, and the slight chop in the bayou. I figured the chop would be much worse as I got farther from shore, and in this I would be right.

We stood for the national anthemn and the pros were off with the cannon shot (thank goodness for the age groupers they blew a horn instead). I ate about half my bagel and drank another 12 oz of Gatorade and tried to sit while I could. I was ready to get this show on the road, or on the water, as the case may be. The sun was now starting to rise and it looked like a clear, warm day so I choose my tinted goggles from my bag.

Around 7:30 I started the process of wiggling into my wetsuit. It actually went on easier than I expected, although I needed Patient Spouse to help tuck me in and zip me up in the back. I tried to spit in my goggles and rinse them out with a bottle of water, but my spit looked suspiciously like Gatorade.

Around 7:45 I started to make my way to the pier for my 8:15 swim wave. I wanted plenty of time to walk there and relax, although no pre warm up swims were permitted because of the rough bottom of the bayou. I did swing my arms around to get the blood flowing and did some minor stretches. I decided to put on my cap and get my hair tucked up nicely, and then I realized I had forgotten my earplugs. So a quick fast walk back about 200 yards to where Patient Spouse had been and he fortunately had not moved more than 15 yards from his original spot, grab the plugs, and a quick walk back to the spot where the nice volunteer held up the W45+ sign--a good warm up for me! We were slowly moving our way up the pier area with each wave that went off every five minutes. Our group was the first of the women to go off.

I spit again in my goggles and put them on to be sure they fit and nothing was going to break. They seemed a little bleary but I decided not to worry about it, and truth be told, they were awesome for the entire swim, never fogged or leaked or hurt. About five minutes before we were to get in the water, I put them on for good. I didn't want to be messing with them in the water.

The only time I had felt the water was when I put one toe in on the way to the pier, and the temperature felt reasonable to me. It allegedly was 71.9 degrees, okay for age grouper wetsuits but not pros. It actually felt a bit warmer to me.

Finally it was our turn to enter the water, which was done by jumping about five feet off a pier into the water (no ladders). I have a fear of dislodging my goggles, so I sat down on the edge of the pier, counted One Potato Two Potato in my head, and jumped in. It was cold but not shockingly so, and I didn't go down very far before I popped up, goggles perfectly in place (I had put one hand on their front when I jumped). I got out of the jump zone and did a couple of warm up strokes towards the start bouys. I positioned myself at the rear center and listened to the countdown and thought THIS IS IT. This is what it has been all about. Let's have some fun.

Once the horn went off, I started swimming immediately. It was quite crowded and we bumped and pushed a bit before we all found our spots, and then I actually enjoyed the swim for about 300 yards. I was swimming pretty easy and sighting every six strokes and seeing the next yellow bouy clearly when suddenly the water got a lot rougher and a bit roly. My first thought was, crap, I'm going to get seasick, and then I told myself, don't be silly, you've never in your life been seasick even on a boat, and after that, I didn't have any real issues with the waves and chop other than the occasional one that smacked me in the face.

Right after that, the first hard going 18-15 woman ran over me with a smack despite my kicking out like a kung fu artist. Then it felt like the water was full of churning arms and legs and it was very hard to keep swimming form while either being hit from behind or running into someone's feet or legs. The water was not murky and I could actually see about 5 feet in front of me which helped, but apparently the hotshots behind me didn't bother looking; they just plowed on. I did have to stop and regroup quickly a few times when I was battered hard, but I never felt panicky, just irritated that these people were interrupting a pleasant swim.

I finally reached the first turn bouy in 18 minutes (I checked my watch) which was 2 minutes ahead of my goal time, and I turned from heading north to heading west, which was exactly cross current with the waves and wind. The chop was harder to deal with here on this long leg (about 1000 yards) and it took longer to get to each marker bouy without the wind at my back. I just started to roll over more to breathe and really only swallowed the Gulf once on a freak wavelet. I could see the sun each time I breathed, and the water was great temperature and my wetsuit plus the salt water kept my nice and bouyant, and even though I could see how far away the shore was, I never once felt scared or worried about it. I even stopped to thank a paddle board volunteer but he looked at me as if I had lost my mind, and maybe I had.

I kept swimming, always doing freestyle and now sighting every 10 yards because on this leg I had a bit more time between bouys because of the cross current. I occasionally would find myself drifting out to sea a bit too much and would correct. I tried to stay away from the marker bouys themselves as there always seemed to be a crowed resting around them. I passed a few swimmers but a lot more passed me. I know there were some DNFs in the water but didn't personally see anyone have to get picked up and I just kept swimming and counting the bouys.

Finally I came to the last turn bouy and then it was only 500 yards home, but it seemed longer. First, it got really crowded on that final turn, and second, we were now headed smack into the wind and waves which slowed us down. It seemed to take forever to get past the big party paddleboat parked at the pier and now I could see the finish area. I kept swimming even past where some were already standing and only stood up when I knew I had to climb up on the lowered pier. They had put carpeting down on the bottom so you didn't cut up your feet as you got out. Both volunteers that were to help you out were busy so I just climbed out on my own and started my trot down the long area to T1. I remembered to yank off my cap and goggles, and undid my wetsuit and slipped out of the sleeves. I stopped at the strippers, who were primarly female, and pointed to the lone male and got a laugh; they stripped me quickly and I was now on my way into T1 and I had survived the long hard swim. My watch showed an hour, which was my swim time into T1.

Half Ironman Finisher!

I finished it! Right smack on goal time for the swim, and ahead of time on the bike and run despite 25 mph headwinds and lots of chop in the salt water. I'm tired and sunburned but what a great day. Race details to come later. I did my race plan, and it worked well. Thanks so much to Coach Claire Oliver for giving me a coaching plan the last year that took me to the finish line. Another shout out to the man upstairs who kept me in the palm of his hand the entire race--no flat tires, no digestive issues, no bonking, no accidents.

Who's runnin down the streets of the city?

Everyone knows it's windy. I already Said that. She's off the bike ahead of plan and running the route I ran yesterday, but she runs 4 times. Route is more sheltered, and now the wins helps with humidity (6.023 x 10**18)

Yea, that's that exactly the name of the Chicago song, bit it's close enough Wind is gusting to 25 or 6. To cover 56 miles, Terry is planning to ride for 4 hours.

Today's observations:
1. Terry has tremendous strength. I remember how hard it was to swim a mile as Boy Scout. I know how hard it was to go 0.3 yesterday. She went 1.2 just for starters. Tremendous.
2. I was at bike in when the first pro came in. They said he averaged 27 mph for 56 miles with this wind. You're a better man than I Gunga Din.
3. Saw a guy at breakfast wearing an IRONMATE t-shirt. Gotta get one. Sounds better than Bucket Bitch.
4. Does Apple make a Bluetooth keyboard for iPhone? If not, why not?

Super Wife zipped through the water and 1st transition clean. I don't think she caught any fish.
She's on her bike into the hot, humid Galveston wind Wind has picked up quite a bit.
Most of the riders going out were slathered in enough sunscreen to qualify as clown paint. Hope her Louisiana roots carry her through these conditions.

I Believe I Can Fly: Tomorrow is Race Day!

Well, R. Kelly is a modern dude, but I've adopted him since I adore this song. It really speaks to me, especially before a race. I believe I can fly; I believe I can touch the sky; think about it every night and day; spread my wings and fly away....

So here we are. 12 months of training and putting in all the time and miles, of missing dinners and happy hours and getting up at the crack of daylight and staying in the LA Fit Pool churning out laps long after everyone else had gone home; after spending Saturday and Sunday mornings out on the bike or the run while envying people who where having a leisurely breakfast: it all coms down to this. Actually, that was pretty dramatic, but it sure sounded awesome.

The wind is pretty brutal here. It's supposed to blow hard tomorrow, up to 25 mph, and when Patient Spouse and I did a short 15 minute warm up bike last night it was like biking into a hurricane. Still, I am prepared to deal with whatever God gives me for the day tomorrow; wind is just wind and I've biked into worse wind than 25 mph.

Patient Spouse did the sprint race today and I'm very proud of his efforts. It was his first race open water swim and it was not short--530 yards--and he did it, and had a great bike split afterwards. He finished the run upright and earned his medal. Now it's my turn.

I expect to be a bit nervous about the swim--after all, we head straight out to sea for the first lap--but I also expect to settle into my groove after about 500 yards and just get it done. It appears it may get a bit warmish on the run, but I'm prepared to hydrate and be cautious with my speed. And best of all, I plan to have some fun. I think I will enjoy the swim--the water is 71 degrees and comfortable, although the conditions on the shore do not permit anyone to warm up swim (oyster beds will cut your feet up), and plan to enjoy the bike along the coastline where I grew up as a child. The run is 4 loops through the Moody Gardens hotel area, and that gives me a chance to connect with Patient Spouse every loop which will be nice.

The volunteers here are simply awesome. This is a great event and should be fun. Since it's a qualifier for the National Championships, a lot of pros and top age groupers are here and should be exciting to watch, although many of them will be finishing before I even head out on the bike!

After watching Patient Spouse finish his race, I laid out my gear and arranged things, went for a five minute easy jog on the course, sat out by the pool for ten minutes, had a big lunch, tried unsuccessfully to nap, attended the pre race meeting (Lord help me there were a lot of fit looking people there!), checked in my bike, packed up my food, and we ordered room service (including dessert!) for dinner.

Patient Spouse will do his best to log on through my iPhone tomorrow if possible and give updates; if that isn't possible I'll recap the race tomorrow night. I am getting ready to hit the sack by 9 p.m. since I didn't get more than a 15 minute nap today, and the more rest I get, the better I will perform. I have a bit of a tight thigh muscle so I took a hot shower and some Advil, and I should be fine by tomorrow morning.

I have faith and confidence in myself and in God's ability to point me to the finish line. What a great experience this will be!

Days Go By: Two Days 'Til Race Day!

Keith Urban, besides being a cute Teddy bear looker of a hunk, has a great rockacountry voice and "Days Go By" is one of his best. Not necessarily a jogging song but a good listening, head-noddin' song.

Days have gone by and here I am two days out from my race. I'm packed, the car is pointed south, and Patient Spouse and I are loading up in a few minutes to go see what the Texas coast has to offer. I'm trying not to obsess over the weather predicted on race day--cloudy, very windy with gusts up to 25 mph, and a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms--the day gives me what the day gives me and I'll deal with it. At least it looks as if it will not be miserably hot which is awesome for me.

I didn't rest as well last night as I had hoped--don't think it was nerves, just springtime allergies and restlessness--but I'll try to get into bed fairly early tonight as we will be up before 5 to get ready for Patient Spouse's sprint race tomorrow. It will be my turn to be support crew for him and I'm looking forward to it.

I've started slowly to intake more carbs and protein (and sure enough, slapped 2 pounds back on within 24 hours) and intake a bit more hydration. This morning I did some easy stretches after warming the muscles with a hot shower and that's it except I hope to get there in time to wheel the bike around for about 20 minutes to make sure all the parts are working right.

I'm really not very nervous about this race at this point; I feel confident that I have put in the time and work necessary and all I have to do is implement my race and nutrition plan, and have a bit of luck to avoid any mishaps, and I'll do fine. Now, I may feel very differently tomorrow or early Sunday morning!

I bought some books to try to give me extra inspiration for the race. And here's a hint: do NOT read "Becoming an Ironman" right before your big race. Although I recommend the book highly, and it does have some motivational stories in it, it's also chock full of descriptions about racers facing vomiting, the runs, broken hands, broken bikes, blisters, broken toes, bloating, getting lost, heat prostration, passing out, etc. I realize the stories are about full ironman races and I'm only doing half that distance, but still. I coulda done without those graphic reminders of Things That Can Go Wrong. I'm now reading about the Iron Nun: the 70 plus old nun who does Iromans, including Kona. That should be much better reading.

She Walks On Water: 3 days 'til race day!

Neil Diamond--what a great name for a superstar, and yes, it's his real name, too (Neil Leslie Diamond). He was such a great crooner of many types of songs, and I forgive him for his missteps (Turn on Your Heartlight? Oh, please.) He wrote some great jogging songs (Brother Love's Travelin' Show and Cracklin' Rosie) but also some lovely crooney ballads. I happen to like She Walks On Water, and the long version (not found on iTunes unfortunately) has a great piano riff in the middle.

Although I don't walk on water, and don't plan to start anytime soon, I found that in my wetsuit swim last week there was simply no way to sink into Davey Jones' locker, or even his attic, for that matter. Even if I quit treading water and tried, I could not go under. So drowning is just not a possiblity in a wetsuit, and with that in mind, I'm really actually looking forward to the swim portion of this race for the first time ever in a triathlon. Last year, when I did my Oly race, I was dreading the 1500 yard swim so much, although the lake was like glass and I was in the last wave to start with no one to run over me. I did it, but I worried my way through most of it. This time, I am a much better swimmer (thanks Coach Claire) than last year, and I find that I really enjoy swimming to boot. So there is no reason that I should not look foward to this swim and enjoy it while I'm in it.

So much of a race is taken up too often with worrying about what comes next or how far you still have to go. I know I'm guilty of that mindset. One of the articles in the great little book Becoming an Ironman talked about a woman's first Ironman race in Hawaii--she forced herself to be in the moment each moment, noticing the flowers and the signs and the beauty of the sparkling water during the swim (I won't quite have sparkling water, but I can notice the sky and clouds and horizon). I hope to keep that mindset during my race, enjoying the dadgummed thing at each moment rather than working myself into a frenzy over how far I still have to pound it out. I've been able to do that on a bike--it helps to smile at the volunteers and thank them because they are working hard too--and now it's time to do it on the swim, too.

Last night was a 2300 yard swim (longer than the race, so I know I can do this distance) broken into 300's mostly, and I tried out my new Darth Vadar goggles (awesome, no leaks) and practiced a little sighting and mental thinking during the long portions of reach, pull, reach, pull, reach, pull, flip turn, and start again. This morning was a short, easy, 30 minute run at average 11:27 pace just to keep my legs and lungs awake and remembering what this is all about. I'm done. I will hop on the bike for about 15 minutes Friday or Saturday to check out the gears and shifting, and probably jog for 10 minutes easy on Saturday to loosen out any kinks, but for all intents and purposes, my last pre race workout was today.

It's critical now that I get as much rest as possible the next two nights (especially tonight, since Friday night will be a short night with Patient Spouse's race being Saturday morning, but I intend to nap Sat afternoon), eat sensibly and start adding some carbs and protein to my meals (tonight? cheap Italian food, yum), and keep hydrating well (but not crazily) the next 3 days, carrying a water bottle around with me at all times. Also doing some simple easy stretching to keep that bursitis on my left hip quiet and my hamstrings supple.

I'm about 94.5% packed (still need to pack a few things, but not many) and will of course spend tonight going over my gear three or four times to be sure that I haven't forgotten anything--sunscreen, bandaids, lip balm, transition towel, bike gloves--I plan to wear them for this one, mostly because they are so darned convenient to wipe your nose with--race watch---well, my list runs for pages.

I'll keep posting up until race day and then Patient Spouse takes over. He's funnier than I am, but more concise. That should be entertaining!

Down the Highway: 4 days 'til race day!

I've already mentioned Bachman Turner Overdrive in an earlier post (a band for my generation and the very first "rock" concert I ever attended) but my spin instructor Barbarian Bob turned me onto "Down the Highway" which was one of their lesser known hits. A great, great jogging song and get it in gear song. Great lyrics, too. "Come on boys, let's get ready to race....let it roll...down the highway...go...go...go!"

So far all has been going as planned. I've not gotten sick or injured, I've dropped another pound (which I will promptly regain once I start to carb up a bit as the weekend nears), the equipment is pretty much in order (got the new goggles last night; a bit of a Darth Vadar look as they came in black rather than my old silver), other than Patient Spouse's bike is still throwing him fits about changing rings so we have to take that back in tomorrow for the 6th time. Fortunately he is only doing the sprint race so if necessary, he can stay in one ring for the entire 12.5 miles since there are not really any hills on the ride, just a lot of wind. And windy it is supposed to be. 20-25 mph winds on race day. Personally, I laugh at that. I've ridden lately at White Rock in 30-40 mph winds and there are some small hills on that ride up into it. Wind, schminnd. Those other riders had best be prepared, but I already am!

Last night I went to spin class and set the tension bar reasonably low for the hour of fun with Barbarian Bob, worked up a sweat and got the heart rate up but didn't stress the muscles or joints, just pedaled fast and enjoyed feeling the strength of my legs. Not that I've dropped a couple of pounds it's easier to see my muscles in my legs and arms (I could still stand to drop 7 more, trust me, but that won't happen before the race) and I sometimes get so overwhelmed with the simple thought that our bodies are just such wonderful things and are capable of doing so very much.

I reached out and asked my friends and co workers yesterday to consider donating one dollar for every mile I finish to a charity of their choice. Not only will this make me feel good as I churn out the miles--that somebody is going to benefit from my madness--it is an extra incentive to keep me going should I do something unexpected like freak out on the swim, or get a flat tire on the bike, or get really tired and dizzy on the run. If I don't finish I will have some serious explaning to do to a lot of people!

Tonight is a long swim (2300 yards) and tomorrow a very short (30 min), very very easy run/jog, and Friday the car points south into the wind for the journey to the island. Still so much to pack! My lists have lists.

Sunday Morning Coming Down: 5 days 'til race day!

I grew up listening to country music and when I went to college at UT Austin in the 70's, cut my grownup teeth on Lone Star and watching Wille and Waylon and Jerry Jeff play live around the various bars, when they were sober/straight enough to remember the words, which was about 50 percent of the time. Country still runs in my veins, not just the newer rockacountry, but the older stuff, like Pasty Cline and of course, Johnny Cash. These are not great jogging songs, but they are great listening songs, including "Sunday Morning Coming Down." Johnny wrote most of his own songs, and you can hear the lonely anguish in every chord of this one.

Sunday morning is indeed coming down soon. I'm ready, or as ready as I'm ever going to be, physically at least, and now the mental readiness is what I need to be focusing upon. I am visualizing the race, the transitions, the start, the finish, the nutrition, the wind, the heat, the salt air on my skin, the gulls crying above my bike. OK, maybe I'm getting carried away a bit here.

I'm still packing, and still amazed at how much "stuff" there is to lug with me, from my oatmeal slow cooker (and the oatmeal, and milk, and honey) to the bike repair stuff "just in case" to that extra set of goggels--no, make that two extra sets, one tinted and one clear. My tinted goggles have been in storage for almost 10 months and showed up with a smudge spot on one side. It's not that bad, but I noticed that I kept thinking I saw a fish to my right when it was only the smudge--not bad in Lake Lavon but might get my heart pumping in Offats Bayou where the fish are, well, a bit larger. So I ordered another pair, overnight, and the shipping probably cost more than the goggles. Fortuanately I have one last swim tomorrow night to get them adjusted and test them out for fit and leaks.

I've told Patient Spouse (who won't start packing until Friday morning; although he is only doing the sprint, with the exception of nutrition he has to use the exact same gear as I do) that I can't bear putting my bike on the outside rack on the way down to get covered in mud, dirt, rain, dust, and bugs, after I just spent an hour washing, cleaning, and oiling it to a shine. So the bike will ride inside the back of the Pilot on the way down, which probably means I have to ride on top to make room for everything, but by golly my bike will be sparkling. On the way back, I'm not going to care quite as much. :-)

Final nutrition for the race is AccelGel in a gel container mounted on the bike (took me some time and experimenting to figure out how to not have that mount rub against my legs, but I managed it), and in tne bike bento box will be a hard boiled egg cut into quarters, a mini PBJ on mini round bread cut into quarters, two Luna bars cut into quarters, and some candy corn scattered at the bottom. Oh, and a small plastic container with two Advil, three salt tablets and one (hopefully not needed) Immodium. Plus lots of Gatorade blue (I like the blue) and a bottle of plain H20 just in case. For the run, my fuel belt will hold a small bottle of Gatorade (which I will refill during the run; Gatorade is being offered at the aid stations. I'll also carry more AccelGels in a gel bottle, some Lunar bars cut up, and some more candy corn. I adore candy corn, and find it easy to chew, better than gummy bears, which take more energy to chew and swallow.

And there you are! Eating and drinking IMO is a major part of getting through a long course, and I'm good at eating and drinking, may come in first place in that category.

Anticipation: 6 days 'til race day!

Carly Simon was one of the greatest crooners of my generation. Voice like silk over brandy, in that low Karen Carpenter-like register that IMO is the best place for a female voice to be, Maria Callas notwithstanding. She was also a bit shunned for a while by her musical peers, apparently because she came from money, and hey, no rich girl could possibly sing, right? Just like no sloth like 53 year old can do a 70.3, right? Oh, so wrong.

Anticipation was a good song, enough to land on my iPod, although IMO not her best ("Loving You's the Right Thing to Do" is much better, and "Let the River Run" makes me want to sing along). Still, this week is simply nothing but anticipation of Sunday, along with starting to pack (and every day I think of something else I need to bring with me), organize, clean up my stuff, and put myself in my Mental Happy Place.

Saturday was a tough 2 hour ride in the hot wind at 2 p.m., and a very close call that nearly ended my 70.3 hopes. I was cruising down Lawther drive at White Rock, wind at my back for a change, about 17 mph or so, down on the bars, about 40 minutes into the ride. It was very crowded at the lake, like most hot sunny weekends. I had been very careful so far to avoid running into anyone and calling out "biker left!" so much that I was getting hoarse. I had already narrowly missed creaming a biker that decided to hop on his road bike and pedal into my path from the dam stopping point WITHOUT LOOKING EITHER DIRECTION but I hollered loud enough that he whipsawed out of my path. I had avoided 3 toddlers on Big Wheels meandering into my lane and one lady pushing a large stroller who was determined to take up the exact middle of the pathway, causing everyone on either side to have to swerve.

There was a parking lot on my right coming up, and a Jeep Cherokee headed toward me with its blinker on, wanting to turn left into it. This Jeep let two other bikers pass, and I was no more than 20 yards behind those two, and I smiled at the driver as I hurtled towards him.

I don't know if he didn't see me (this was sunny daylight, and no curves in the road, I was visible for miles) or he thought he could zoom in between me and the previous bikers, but he suddenly elected to turn not 15 yards in front of me.

I was going to go over his hood. There was no way to avoid it. I know people say your life flashes in front of your eyes. It didn't, but what did flash was me thinking, "a year of hard work and I'm going to end up a week before the race in a pile of twisted metal and rubber." I swear I don't remember sitting up and hitting my brakes, but I did, and I screamed. The driver looked up, and I saw his eyes go wide, like the slow mo movie thing, and he hit HIS brakes, but he was already halfway through his turn and I was zooming toward his white gleaming hood as I frantically pumped the brakes and continued screaming.

I don't know how I did this, and I give it all to the Man Upstairs, but somehow, I managed to swerve at the last freaking second and miss his bumper by about two inches because I turned INTO the parking lot he was trying to enter, fishtailing and bucking and working my butt off to stay upright.

I don't know what I said to this guy, because I truly don't recall. I know I said something. I know he said he was sorry. A biker right behind me stoppped to check on me, and shook his head about the idiot driver. I got back on the bike, shaken but not stirred, and it took about 30 minutes for me to get my heart back down from where my ears are at. I was lucky. This could be a post from a hospital bed, or even worse.

So, I put that down to the "bad rehearsal, great performance" file. Hopefully, the only traffic I will have to deal with on the race is other bikers, and because I am not the fastest bullet from the gun, and it's a one loop ride, that should be very few of them.

On Sunday Patient Spouse and I went to Lake Lavon for a practice open water swim. It was very breezy, wind about 35 mph, and the swimming cove was fairly protected, but there was still enough wind and chop and current to make me glad we practiced, so I will be prepared for those kind of conditions (the advance weather forecast for Sunday currently says "breezy. High 80." Hot and windy. I'm ready for it). We worked on sighting to some bouys, running into each other, and doing the thing that is the worst IMO of open water swims--putting my face into the cold water and forcing myself not to gasp myself into oxygen debt instantly. Once I get about 200 yards into the swim, that feeling dies down, but the initial shock is something I never can seem to avoid. I do love my new wetsuit and actually enjoyed the swim outside; so much more fun than flip turning on pool walls 3,453 times in a row.

Wetsuits were then washed out and hung to dry (will be folded and put away tonight), bike was washed, cleaned, oiled, bike repair bag examined (lots of old interesting things in there) and repacked. Lists upon lists have been made. Maps studied. There are 35 women entered in my age group for the 70.3, and I will be happy to come in 35th so long as I cross the line before the time deadline.

Tonight I'm taking a short easy walk with the dogs, and tomorrow is probably spin class with tension bar nearly all the way to zero, Wednesday is a long swim and Thursday a short run in the morning.

I plan to post from Galveston on Friday and Saturday pre race, and my spouse is supposed to post updates during the race when he sees me (after the swim, the bike, and during the run).

Take It Easy: 9 days 'til race day!

OMG. I am down to counting days to two hands, and no toes. It's almost here.

I didn't have time to start obsessing about the race until day, because I've been so screaming busy at work. Nothing like work to take your mind off training, and vice versa, so I guess it balances out.

I'm easing into a taper, which is always just delightful after months (a year?) of pounding yourself into smudge spots on the asphalt. It's always so tempting to keep pushing, keep working hard, but evidence (that science again) shows that about 14 days before a big event, the cake is in the oven and you had best not try to overcook the dadgummed thing before the starting gun. You won't get any stronger, and you can easily get injured or overtired. Tapering down is supposed to bring you to maximum effort on race day.

So Monday was a 45 minute jog/walk (12:15 average pace, which would normally send me clawing my eyes out in panic, but I am serious about going slow), Tuesday was a spin class where I kept the tension bar fairly low and just tried to go with a fast but aerobic cadence, keeping the legs awake and reminding them there was more to come soon. Wednesday a 1700 yard easy swim, which is now a short swim for me, and it felt good and the water felt like silk to me, as I tried to recreate the feelings of the start, sighting, being bumped, etc. as best I could in a 25 yard LA Fitness pool (thanks to the plump lady in the lane next to me doing jumping ups and downs, which helped recreate some wave action). Last night I went to bike repair class at Richardson Bike Mart, and took apart my wheels, chain, etc., and fixed a fake flat with only one question for assistance (why does this thingamajig not come off? Because it's not supposed to? Oooohhh). I now feel confident that I can change a front tire in about 15 minutes assuming and a rear tire in about seventeen hours, depending on the temperament of my chain and derailuer.

This morning was another 45 minute jog/walk, average pace increased to 11:50 a mile because it was really hard to go easy with the nice weather--cool and very little breeze. Tomorrow is a 2 hour easy bike (with the wind, it will be hard to go easy, but I'll do my best) and Sunday is a 30 minute open water swim with Patient Spouse, after expending 3,304 calories squeezing into the wetsuit.

I've checked the extended weather forecast for Galveston every day but it's only running through Thursday so far (nice, but breezy, but I plan on that); I've checked the trial website constantly, and today they posted actual cutoff times which freaked me out, but, to be honest, they are pretty generous, and if I don't have a rear flat with a temperamental chain on top of it, I should be okay. I have to exit the water no later than 9:35 (my wave starts at 8:20 and if I can't complete the swim in an hour fifteen, I need to quit and go watch reruns the rest of the day), and I have to reach mile 48.2 by 1:18 p.m. on the bike (I love these non round numbers. If I reach mile 48.15 by 1:18, that will be tough on me). Assuming I'm out on the bike around 9:35, that means an average of about 13.7 mph to get me there, and that is surely doable even with a mean wind. Gotta finish the whole 56 miles by 1:51 p.m.. Gotta start the fourth lap of the run (around mile 10) by 4:31 and be across the finish line by 5:20.

So, assuming nothing untoward happens like a bad cramp in the swim, or a freak out (which I don't expect, but I know better than to discount it), or a bad flat, or TWO flats, or a total and complete bonk on the run (which will only occur if I fail to execute my race plan properly, including hydration and nutrition), or an injury or crash, these times are well with my range. My Pie in the Sky goal for finishing is 7 hours 45 minutes. I will be happy to cross the line anytime, however, before official cutoff time.

I'm washing my hands like Lady McBeth this week, trying to avoid catching a cold or virus, I'm planning to get as much sleep as possible next week (please everyone tell my clients that for me), I'm trying to eat well, stretch, loosen muscles, and visualize success (the mind being the most powerful muscle of them all). I'm ready for this baby and excited about it. When that gun sounds (actually, it's a horn) I'm going to shout YEA BABY (just for you, Julie Casey!) and go into the swim with a stupid grin. How utterly awesome to be able to even participate in something like this.

By the way, Take It Easy is an excellent Eagles song that really shows off their country origins. And for your information, in Winslow AZ, there is a cutout of a man with a guitar standing on the corner. Truth.

Wave on Wave: 13 days to race day!

Just to prove I am not totally the creakiest skeleton in the wetsuit, I do happen to listen to music that was invented after say, the invention of the microwave oven. Pat Green is a greater rocker and guitar slinger IMO who manages to combine country and rock in a good way (sometimes, artists combine them--or try to--in bad ways. See, for example, Kenny Rogers and "Islands in the Stream"). Wave on Wave is a great jogging song.

Our swim waves were published last week. Like most large triathlons, we start in swim waves 5 minutes apart. The pros go first, and there are some big pros entered in Galveston and I hope some of them show up. I suspect many are training for the first Houston Ironman (TM) in May. Mirinda Carafree, who won the women's division in Kona, is entered. I hope she is not worried that I will pass her on the bike.

Then the age groups get divided up, and my group (old ladies 45+) is the first of the females to go off, after most of the males, at 8:20 a.m. The good news is that this gives me about 20 minutes more for my cutoff times (the cutoff times are based on the start of the last wave group). The bad news is, of course, that a giant battalion of younger and stronger chicks are going to be swimming right up my a$%&* very quickly. I figured at my pace, I have about 400 yards of peace before I will get plowed into by a lot of female rubber. Therefore, I will be sure to try to keep my position a bit outside in order for the Fasties to pass me by on the inside rail, so as to speak. And I am prepared to kick out or flail my arms like a maniac if someone should still try to run me over. I learned the last time to protect my space with my legs and arms. Meow!

Now, I ordered a new wetsuit from Quinta Roo and it arrived 7 days ago in its box. There it has sat for a week. I have not found the time nor the energy to try it on, and yet I knew it needed to happen pretty soon. Trying on a wetsuit, for me, is an experience alarmingly like a tough workout. Although I am not necessarily a Fat Chick, I carry 135 pounds on a 5'5" frame and no one is going to ask me to audition for America's Next Model anytime soon. Cramming those 135 pounds into a vise of rubber is not what I call a Fun Time.

Last night Patient Spouse left for a business trip and since there was no one to watch my antics, and laugh at them, I decided it was time to try on the batsuit. Because the manufacturers are very clear about NOT using bodyglide when you try on a wetsuit if you think you might return it, I had to go without any assistance from chemicals.

I am not going to describe in painful detail how long it took me to wiggle into the thing, or how frustrated I get when I can't find a purchase on my legs to pull up the wrinkles (don't use your fingernails! Righto, and just how am I supposed to get a grip on this tight rubber vise without using my fingers, huh?), and how I wondered if Aussies were all short in leg and long in arm. Finally--FINALLY I got the thing on, except for the back velcro flap which has an extra piece of fabric to tuck in which I simply could not do without assistance, not at 9:30 p.m. at night, anyway. But the dadgummed thing fit perfectly AND it was soooo much more comfortable than my other suit in the neck and shoulders that I was amazed. I can't wait to try it out this weekend on my practice open water swim. I hope it warms up before then, it's 50 degrees right now and that doesn't sound too appetizing for a dip in the lake.

This week and next week are easy weeks as I taper down for the race. I have a short run/walk tonight that I'm looking forward to after my last long brick this past Saturday (90 minute ride and 30 minute run). I am trying to continue to eat well, keep the pounds down (if I lose one more, hoory, but 135 is fine for race day, and I don't want to undereat), keep the hydration up, and get some sleep (as much as I can, anyway). I plan to try and change a fake flat tire one night this week for practice, and over the weekend I will slowly start to assemble my gear. It takes a lot of gear to go 70.3 miles!

It's been a year of training for this event, and I've not regretted one minute of it. Whether I get across the line or not, the journey was the destination. So many hours in the pool, on the bike, on the hoof, and it all comes down to the starting gun in 13 days.

Superstition: 19 days 'til race day!

Stevie Wonder is simply one of my greatest hits guys; he's all over my iPod and he was all over my life, throughout high school, college, law school and thereafter. Although he had a couple of duds IMO, most of his stuff was simply true music--a variety of slow, fast, fun and tuneful (the fact that he was blind is simply beside the point--I mean, the man can ROCK).

Superstition, like many of his songs, is a combo of blues, reggae and rock. It's a great song with cool words (13 month old baby broke the looking glass? C'mon, what a great line. Who uses the term "looking glass" anymore, anyway?). Listening to it last night during a long (2400 yard ladder drill) swim made me think about superstitions and talismans and anything else people do for "luck" prior to, or during a race. When it comes to the start line, we all tend to go thinking about that magic potion that will lift us across that finish line.

This is different than chanting mantras (my mantras tend to evolve, like my training, and what works one day gets tossed aside another day), or even eating and drinking the same stuff, because that is more training than voodoo. Superstitions and rituals are the stuff of the mind, and hey, never let it be said that the mind can't be tricked into thinking certain ways, because it sure by golly can.

I've seen runners touch milepost signs as they go by, I've seen bikers get worried if they get on their bikes on the "wrong side" (like it was a horse or something), I've read about the racers using the same underwear (really, now, who wears UNDERWEAR during a tri race) or socks or hat or whatever. Special bracelets, necklaces, shoelaces--you name it, we got it going on. Writing inspirational messages on one's hand, one's arm, or leg is another thing--although I would probably sweat mine off, which would concern me.

Me? I'm not so partial to anything particular, and I'm suddenly worried about that. I think I might need a bit of the voodoo myself on this race. Is it too late to claim a pair of fairly new socks as my lucky socks? I do have one ritual though: I put on my Ironman Timex ($40, on line) the day BEFORE the race, and take off my regular watch and stow it away. This tells me it's time to get serious; the Watch Is On. Otherwise, I'm pretty non superstitious (my spouse would tell you that isn't true); the pragmatist in me says it's the training and the planning and the nutrition and execution that gets you to the finish chute, not the lucky bracelet.

I'm starting to get a bit nervous now, although so far it's a good nervous. Last Sunday was my last long brick and I didn't perform as well as the prevoius ones, had a good bike ride but a slower run; it was very very windy (30-35 mph) and very hot. Just like race conditions might be! Still, I'm very convinced I am going to do this race, and finish strong. The wind is the same for everyone.

Tonight is a shorter run (intervals, but short) and tomorrow a swim, followed by an interval bike on Thursday, and another swim on Friday (lots of swims lately!). Saturday is a shorter brick (90 minutes) as I start to taper down for the race itself. I'm starting to watch what I eat more carefully, trying hard to ingest lots of good fruits and veggies, good carbs and lean protein, and staying away as much as I can from sugar and booze. I'm at a pretty good weight now, but don't want to put any more on before the race and have to lug it through 56 miles of biking and 13 miles of running! And if I can shed one more pound before the race, that's one less pound to carry. But I have to be careful not to eat too little and get fatigued or out of gas.

I've bought the new goggles, and am still awaiting arrival of the new wetsuit (any day). I've scheduled a haircut. I've bought a new bento box for the bike, a new CO2 cartridge (mine is old, and I worry they may go bad?) and I still have a few little things to put together, but most of the big stuff is done. The bike is right now at the bike shop getting the deluxe tune up and clean and lube so it will be in prime condition on race day (this gives me a couple of weeks to ride it "just in case" someone at the bike shop turns a screw the wrong way--it can happen).

Superstitious? Maybe my new socks will be my talisman for the race. They are from deFeet, and they say "run like hell" on them. Good idea.

All She Wants to Do is Dance--31 days 'til race day

The Eagles, without a doubt, were one of my top five fav bands of the 70s and 80s. I adore their mix of country twang and rock, and to know the lyrics of their songs was kind of a badge of honor back in college at UT Austin (especially Hotel California--not that anyone understood what the song meant, of course, but to sing it all through, drunk or sober, was considered very cool). The first time I saw the Eagles in concert was 1975, and they were the BACK UP band for the Rolling Stones at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, where I and about 10,000 other weary souls stood, or passed out, as the case was, in 110 degree heat for 12 hours to hear the Stones play, but the Eagles were just as good IMO that day, plus they came on at a reasonble hour. Yeah, I was 18 and stupid, but it was good to be 18 and stupid. It's good to be 53 and stupid, too. Trust me.

One of their great jogging songs IMO is All She Wants to Do is Dance. If you can listen to that tune without moving some part of your body, you are in more trouble than I can help you out of. Great lyrics too--the Eagles actually knew how to throw in words on top of a tune.

I listened to that tune this morning ("Malatov cocktail, the local drink...and all she wants to do is dance....mix it up right in the kitchen sink...and all she wants to do is---" you know the rest, sing along here) as I headed out on an hour tempo run at 6:55 a.m., my reflecto bands glinting in the daylight savings time darkness. Very windy and humid--gonna be like that on race day, though, so good practice. Did a couple of hills easily, thinking, wow, after spending 5 days in Colorado clambering uphill in bulky ski boots, this is easy stuff (no wonder the pros live up there and come down to race). Of course, by minute 45, it wasn't as easy as minute 2had been, but it was okay, even in the howling wind.

Last night was a 2200 yard swim drill and the water felt great. 5 days away from swim-bike-run last weekend has re-energized my muscles, even though I spent 3 of those days doing some hard skiing (the hardest part was, as you know, putting on those dadgummed ski boots--busted 300 calories each time, I swear to you). I felt like I was gliding through the water, even during the 8 x 25 yard bust yer rear sprints. Never underestimate the power of going hard, and then going for a rest.

Broke down and ordered a new wetsuit today. My old one is fine, a used Zoot Fusion I snapped up for $85 on sale, but it has several (repaired) tears in it that are starting to think about leaking, and so now I'm going to sell it and get a new Quinta Roo Hydrofull (assuming I like it once I try it on). I realize back of the packers don't need to spend all this $$ on gear, but dernit, if I'm going to swim 1.2 miles I am going to be comfortable doing it. Plus I intend to keep doing this triathlon stuff for many years (although probably Oly and sprint distances until I hit work retirement). There. I've just justified spending money on something non-essential. I'm very good at that.

Now all I need is some new goggles--I can buy those locally--a haircut and a bike tune up, and a night next week pretending to fix a flat tire so I can remember how to do it if that becomes an issue on race day (I didn't train for a year to DNF on a flat tire!). Last long brick this weekend, and a long swim without stopping.

So today, I'm feeling good about the whole thing. All I want to do is dance! :-) I'll get my opportunity soon. Here's hoping for good weather and good health on race day.

It Don't Come Easy-Four Weeks 'Til Race Day!

Back when the Beatles divorced, it was a shock wave felt 'round the world. Each member of the fab four then went on to have somewhat varying degrees of success alone. One would argue that John didn't have as much time as the others because his life was tragically shortened. Still, it's hard to deny that Sir Paul isn't the one that rose the highest after the great divide, if you can forgive some of that terrible bubble gum pop out of Wings.

Ringo, bless his nose, never rose very high above the post Beatles era, but he did have some good rockin' songs. It Don't Come Easy was one of the best, if not the most grammatical.

Last week was not easy. After a hard brick on Sunday (54 mile bike and 3 mile run) I had a long swim on Monday (2500 yards, pretty much straight through), spin class on Tuesday, a 7.6 mile run on Wednesday morning, and then back to back bricks on Thursday (I took the day off work for this fun)--90 minute bike followed by 30 minute run, followed by SECOND 90 minute bike followed by SECOND 30 minute run. By THursday night I was really tired, and we were leaving to go skiing the next day. Friday, a travel day, found me hobbling around with a terrible, terrible back ache that worried me immensely, but fortunately, Advil and a night's rest made it totally disappear. It would just be so bad to have an injury at this point.

Friday morning my heart rate was elevated from its usual 62 beats per minute to a 70 beat per minute, a classic sign of getting close to overtraining. I was glad to have some time off to recover.

We skiied hard the next 3 days, which certainly helped my cardio and strength, but I did no biking or running. After travel on Tuesday, I'm back in the saddle, or at least in the pool tonight, as my heart rate is back down to its normal state and I'm rested and ready for the next push.

I am starting to envision the race lately, trying to make it all come together in my head, which is hard since there is no way I can obviouly picture 8 hours in my head! But I am thinking about the swim start, how I pace myself in the water and keep myself from freaking out, how often I will lift my head to sight (about every six left arm strokes), where I will position myself (in the back to the right), how I will exit the water and what things I will take off wear, and how I will get onto the bike and out on the course. About this point, I tend to fall asleep while thinking about it, so I've not contemplated the run yet!

There's still a lot left for me to do to get organized, including buying a new bento box for the bike (the one I have is too floppy), getting a new pair of goggles (same brand, but mine are almost 18 months old and pretty scratched up), getting my bike cleaned up and tuned, getting a hair cut (really! Who needs hair in your eyes for 56 miles?), and more. I've made our hotel reservations, intending to stay over Sunday night after the race (as I told Patient Spouse, after 8 hours on my feet, I am NOT getting into a car for another 5!). In addition, of course, I have to keep training and working for a living. Oh, yeah, that.

If it came easy, everyone would do it.

I Will Survive: Five Weeks 'Til Race Day!

I was (and still am) very much into Motown and blues especially from the 60s and 70s (which of us from that era did NOT grow up learning the Supreme's hand motions for "Stop In the Name of Love?"). Gloria Gaynor actually cut her teeth singing disco (for which we will forgive her) and she released "I Will Survive" in 1979, just in time for me to learn the lyrics during studying for college graduation. Great lyrics for any generation. Great song on the iPod for working out.

Thus we continue with the hard workouts as we move closer to the 70.3, which increase in distance and intensity until taper time. Coach Claire is leading me up to the event by making sure I am ready both physically and mentally for the challenge. I'm finally convinced I can not only do this thing, but, barring injury or illness or something outside my control on race day, I can do it with a smile at the finish line (it may look like grimace to YOU, buddy, but to me, it will look like a smile).

This weekend was a short (one hour--when did one hour runs become short in nature?) run in the blast wind from the north on Saturday. The good news is that it was a north wind, which means my last mile home is downwind and that little push in the backside from a strong wind means a lot some days.

On Sunday, it was semi dress rehearsal day--a 3.5 hour ride and a 45 minute tempo run. The wind was still blowing, but not as hard as Saturday thank goodness (only about 10-15 mph, which is normal for this time of year). It was a chilly morning, and as I ate my oatmeal with honey and berries (thanks for the crock pot hint! it cooked perfectly all night long) I debated my fashion options. It would probably be best to wear tights, but I had just purchased a new pair of (expensive) carbon Tyr tri shorts that I wanted to tri out, because they are going to be my choice for the race if they worked right. So I decided on the shorts, but a long sleeved wicking shirt under my new (expensive, but not as much as the shorts) tri top and a medium weight bike jacket on top.

We arrived (the Patient Spouse and I) at White Rock around 9 a.m. and brrr it was brisk in that wind. I was grateful for my jacket and was happy to put on the bike helmet and gloves. The bike bento box was loaded with a hard boiled egg (cut in quarters, salted, and in a baggie), 3 gels in my squeeze bottle, some gummy bears, and a cut up Luna Raspberry Chocolate bar (cut into widdle bite sizes, and in a baggie), and my water bottles were loaded with Gatorade Pro (on the aerobar bottle) and water (on the seat tube). Two Advil were tucked in a small nose clip plastic holder and stuffed in the bento box just in case. My run fuel belt held my small Gatorade bottle, some gummies, and another gel. I flelt like a camel headed to the desert for two weeks.

Off into the cool wind we rode, trying to go easy pace but the chill making us want to pedal harder. Six times 'round the lake was my goal (about 9.1 miles each trip) for the 3.5 hours. Patient Spouse was going to do 2 laps and a short run (he's my sprint tri guy) and then take his car on home.

First lap was faster than I wanted, over 15 mph average for the 9 miles, and then I had to stop to use the portapot (I had hydrated quite well the day before, thanksverymuch), and we were off for lap 2. Patient Spouse took off on his sprint pace and all I saw of him was his north end headed south for awhile, and then he disappeared from sight. At 14 miles I took in a half gel, and was careful to ensure that I took a large hefty swig of Gatorade each time the Garmin beeped a mile.

Second lap done a bit slower, wind a bit stronger and the crowds a bit heavier to dodge, then guess what, off for a portapot visit again (some of this is good hydration. Some of this is old age. Being over 50 is not for the faint of heart) and quickly back on the bike for lap 3--halfway. Sun's out strong now, beautiful early spring morning with trees in bloom and flowers starting, heaving my way up the 4 hills and muttering only 3 more times to do these, trying to save my legs a bit for the run while still not puttering along too slowly. At mile 28 (halfway for 56, even I can do the math) I ate my hard boiled egg a little at a time, and it was VERY tasty, the salted egg just hitting the spot for me. Learned something: put a marble or rock in the baggie to weigh it down when empty or else the wind is going to try to snatch it away, and littering on a tri can mean a DQ. Remind myself not to eat the rock.

Third lap down. I managed to not stop at the portapot this time. Starting to get cross eyed at seeing everything for the FOURTH time and knowing there was more to come (oh, there is the dog park...again....). Decided that my gel bottle should go in my back pocket instead of the bento box since it's taking up too much room in there, and I can't reach my other goodies. Takes a minute to stuff in it there. Cyclists have to be so good at riding one handed while using the other to grab nutrition, stuff our faces with it, put away trash, change gears, wipe nose (what gloves are for!), scratch, etc. I wish I was better coordinated at all this.

Park getting more crowded and more people to dodge, more children to worry about, more oblivious walkers stepping out in front of you from nowhere. Feet getting numb. Wiggle toes, arch feet, point upwards. Butt getting numb. Making sure I stand up in the saddle on every small downhill, sometimes on the flat. Winstead Hill getting higher (okay I made this one up).

Fourth lap down and two to go. Getting warm, had to stop and strip the bike jacket and (again) use the facilities. I am going to lose five or six minutes just visiting Mr. John. Can't be helped. I know the pros sometimes go on the bike--yes they do--but it's not gonna be me, babe. Quickly off for lap five, feeling it now in my legs a wee bit. Try to ease off on the 4 hills, seated climb and not standing, hunkering down low into the increasing breeze. Taking in more gel, some Luna Bar bites, a few gummies. Reach back for the gel bottle. Can't get it out. new shirt (Orca) that has flaps over the back pocketes. Great idea for not losing things; lousy idea for getting things out. Takes five minutes and six curse words to unleash the gel--put it in the bento box again. New shirt is now on the bad list.

Still feeling strong. Hit the bad hill and say ONE MORE TIME SUCKA to it.

Sixth lap coming up--last one! Butt really getting numb and so are toes. I can make the toes do okay by moving my feet around but the backside is just what it is. I love love the new Tyr carbon shorts but nothing short of getting off will make my rear get comfortable, let's face it.

Felt good to say to each hill that I won't be seeing you again. Still pedaling smoothly, no real issues, no real pain other than tired butt and numbish toes. Still over the aerobars so that tells me I'm not too tired. Reminding myself I have a run to do.

Parking lot coming up! 54.9 miles for the trip in 3:40, not too bad on time. If I can do 56 in 3:45 at the race, I'm way ahead of my time goal, so this is good news.

Stand up a bit in the pedals to get the blood flowing, shake my legs one at a time, come into the lot and unclip, GENTLY hop off the bike (learned the hard way that after a long bike, a quick dismount can lead to ugly things for shaky legs), into the car with it, on with the shoes and fuel belt, grab the Garmin off the bike and snap onto the wrist band, off with the helmet and gloves, and a quick trip (last one) to the portalet--and now I'm off running. Er, jogging. But moving.

Actually I didn't run all that slow. My running pace was between 10:30 and 11:15 min per mile pace, but I did run 8/walk 2 the entire time which is my goal for the first 4 miles of the real race (after that, I have to re assess how I feel; I may go to run 7/walk 3 etc). I did walk one other time when I turned up the area to the dam and forgot it was straight uphill so I gave myself 1.5 extra walking minutes and ran the rest of that steep uphill gritting my teeth. I continued to swig Gatorade and consume gel and Luna Bar each walk break, cursing at the flaps on the shirt pockets and wondering if I could sew them open later.

I was happy to see the finish line at 45 minutes (3.9 miles) but I wasn't falling over exhausted and could have kept going if I simply had to. I did note my mind was a bit fuzzy. Not uncommon for post race syndrome.

A great post workout stretch, some yoga, a burger and a Diet Coke put me back into mental swiftness. I didn't feel all that tired the rest of the day, and got some chores done, but was grateful for lights out that night around 9:45 p.m.

There's more to come, and I'm ready for it, but I've done part of the race already (I realize there wasn't a swim beforehand, and I only ran a little more than a quarter of the distance. Still. I KNOW I can do it).

Six Weeks 'til Race Day: Another Brick in the Wall

Pink Floyd was one of those rock groups that you either hated or loved, and there was generally no in between, except for me, who detested them except for that one popular song "Another Brick in the Wall." The reason I loved the song was the term "another brick in the wall." It just stood for so many things symbolically. Day's over? Another brick in the wall. Dishwasher unloaded? Another brick in the wall. I realize you can carry this metaphor too far and brick yourself into several literary corners, but I still use the dadgummed expression.

And with training bricks, here's another way to abuse the phrase all over again. Six weeks out and my weekend training is now focused on bricks--run based ones, bike based ones, hard ones, easy ones, and all sorts in between. "Bike-run-in combination." Hard stuff. Necessary stuff.

Last weekend was a killer. The wind in Dallas was blowing 40-45 mph and it was late afternoon before I could get on the bike, so you know it was really howling that time of day. Our windiest day of the year so far. Perfect conditions for my 2.5 hour bike/30 minute run on Saturday. But time and weather wait for no man, or woman, or triathlete, so I girded up my loins and loaded the bike for White Rock, where I watched EMTs rescuing capsized boats whilst I pumped my tires (this is a true statement. No one seemed to have drowned, but there were 3-4 small upside down boats that rescue craft had to go out and tow in with along with their damp owners).

Off we go, downwind for the first part of the ride, not too bad, crusing smoothly and then here's the first major turn and whammo! Blast winds straight into your face, causing that nice light bike to shimmy and shake and your sweaty palms to grip those tiny little areobars (why did I get the short ones???). Legs pedaling hard, but moving about 12.5 mph even downshifting like mad. Fun? I had four laps of the lake to contemplate with this fun.

I kept thinking the downwind portions (which logically should be about half the trip, but illogically, as Spock would say, seemed to only be about a quarter of the trip) would make up for the lost speed of the into the wind portions, but it really didn't. I would average between 15-18 mph on the downwind parts (sometimes a bit more if there was a slight downhill), but struggle around 12-14 mph on the upwind areas. My average pace for the 2.5 hour ride (37 miles) was around 14.2 mph which is slow (not creepingly slow, but slow). And that was pushing it on the windward portions, which you had to do or just topple over.

However, I told myself this: Self, if you can do this ride, you can handle anything that old Galveston tosses at you wind-wise, because anything stronger than this and it's a stupid tropical storm (looked it up. Tropical storm winds are above 38 mph. So really, I was already riding in one, at least from a wind standpoint). Great training ride for the real thing. And I did handle it. Not terribly fast, true, but within my parameters for my race (which is 14-15 mph for the 56 miles) and I didn't fall over and collapse from it either (although I did consider canceling my dental appointment next week since I felt that I had already had my teeth sandblasted clean). I managed to jump off the bike and still go for a 30 min run (2.7 miles) which wasn't terribly slow in nature, although I did take a couple of quick walk breaks during it, and I was pretty glad to see the Garmin hit the 30 minute mark.

On Sunday I had to get up and do a 60 minute run. Friends and neigbors, I am here to tell you that I was tired on that run. I know part of the training is teaching your body how to run tired (so it won't be so shocked when you ask it to do just that on race day), but this was not easy--and the wind was still howling, making my downwind running legs just delightful. Still, I stuck it out, doing the planned run 8 walk 2 the entire time, and never really bonked or hit the wall, just felt tired and a bit heavy legged.

This week I get two days off (yeah!) in preparation for the Big Rehearsal on Sunday. This will be a 3.5 hour bike (very close to race distance) followed by a 45 minute tempo run. I will sleep, pack, dress, eat and hydrate as if it were race day morning. I'll try to hit the trails about the same time of day that I estimate I will hit the bike portion on the triathlon (around 8:45 a.m. or so) so I know how my body reacts to things at that time of day.

I'm praying the wind gods go elsewhere this weekend, but if they don't, I'll manage!
